This week we got a nice book from Firefly Books LTD. written by Tony Seddon, freelance art director and writer. The pretitle a graphic guide to 100 landmark typefaces reached our attention.

Since the invention of Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press, typefaces are a fundamental part of written language in our modern world. Since the 15th century there droped out a lot of amazing fonts and with them a lot of different styles and characters. But which one is the most influential typeface of it’s time? Tony Seddon found 100 typeface that can represent the key elemtns of style for each point in history of type. Presented in chronological order, each typeface is discussed in terms of origins and it’s impact in design history. Hot metal type, hand setted type, monotype an linotype machines as phototype and digital revivals of iriginals such as Baskerville, Bodoni, Clarendon, Gill, Akzidenz-Grotesk, Bookman, News Gothic, Perpetua, Gill Sans, Futura, Neue Haas Grotesk also known as Helvetica, Univers and more are discussed. Also the biographies of some of the worlds greatest inventors of type are represented.
For general readers this book gives a great insight in how the evolution of type took place and for some insiders this book is maybe a helpful guide and informational masterpiece. We recommend this book to all who are fascinated by typefaces and their characterisms.
